Congratulations
to Ms. Jane Dearborn, Virginia Beach Central Academy, and the Virginia
Department of Social Services; their community partnership has
been recognized as a 2004-2005 Model Partnership by
the VBCPS Partnership Advisory Link.
VBCA's
partnership with the Respite Daycare has spanned the last seven
years. Ms. Dearborn has taken small groups of students to visit
the Respite Daycare four times throughout each school year, where
her students have spent time with the younger children. Activities
have included reading, putting puzzles together, coloring, blowing
bubbles, swinging on the swings, making crafts (created and taken
to the daycare by Central Academy students), and playing with the
children and their toys. In addition, they have frequently taken
the children to the playground for outside activities. The high
school students have swung the young children, gone down the slides
with them, and played on the other playground equipment. Many times a student has interacted with one child during the visit, while some students have
played with several children.
For
the past five years, Virginia Beach Central Academy has conducted
an “Adopt a Child” activity at Christmas time. Students
and staff have generously donated gifts for the children delivered
by Ms. Dearborn and her students. The program has been a great
success, with two or three gifts for each child. The students at
Central Academy have benefited as much from the program as the
children at the Respite Daycare.
