Student Support Specialist: Nikki R. Grossman Responsibilities
- To provide services to the at-risk student
- To transition students from an alternative education facility to a comprehensive high school
- To improve behavior, attendance, and grades of at-risk students
- To conduct progress meetings with students
- To meet with teachers, administrators, parents, and other staff in support of students' success
- To serve as a mediator between the student and teacher
- To provide resources for parents and teachers to help with improving student behavior
- To conduct Choices Program sessions
- To serve as a resource for the Student Support Team
- To facilitate mediation between students as requested by the administration
The Choices Program
Choices is an after school program that targets students with behavior issues. Classes meet twice weekly for five weeks after school. The curriculum includes ample opportunity to practice skills using role play involving real life situations. Follow-up meetings are done with students after they complete the program.
The Choices program focuses on the following:
- Problem Solving
- Anger Management
- Decision Making
- Communication with peers, teachers, and others.
Referral Process
Students are referred to the Student Support Specialist through the Student Support Team, School Administrator, and Alternative Education Centers (SAIP, CEL, VBCA, and VBJDC).
Monitoring Progress
The Student Support Specialist will communicate with teachers, parents and administrators through email or face-to-face meetings. Individual meetings with students are usually no longer than 15 minutes during the school day. Cases are generally maintained for a 9-week grading period.
